OMNI

Prototypes - SP 2021

- This project was completed during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic, a period of limited access to woodshops and facilities -

The OMNI violin concept is an acoustic/electric violin hybrid, and a love letter to my past self as a classically trained musician. This device is designed to satisfy the needs of both classically trained acoustic violin users and electric violin users, by combining certain features between acoustic and electric designs.

This electric violin features a novel detachable sound box, as well as powered volume and tone controls.

The concept behind this device stems from my personal experiences as a classically trained musician. Many violinists prefer traditional violins for their sound quality and sound projection capabilities brought upon by a violin’s sound box- something electric violins lack. At the same time, some prefer electric violins for their amp capabilities, unconventional appearances, and the capacity for silent playing when disconnected from power.

Through this project, I wanted to bridge the gap between the two violins and emphasize the strengths of both archetypes. The detachable sound box allows the user to project a natural sound much like a traditional violin when attached, but allows for quieter playing when removed. The natural wood finish is a callback to the traditional appearnce of a violin, but is coupled with a more unconventional form.
